In the previous post, we talked about the various challenges of transport for seniors, along with how they could be resolved. We highlighted Uber (and similar services) as a potential solution, one that has a unique set of advantages and disadvantages.
Today, we’re considering a more common option, public transport.
Public transport is one of the most popular alternatives to driving, for people of all ages. It is typically inexpensive and is relatively easy to use. In large cities, there will often be many public transport routes.
In many situations, public transport is very powerful. But, there are some significant limitations and issues to consider first. These aspects help determine whether public transport is the right approach.
Limitations of Public Transport
Public transport is a good first choice for getting around. But, it won’t be relevant in all situations.
For one thing, many services will have a limited route. The services are only useful if the desired locations fall on (or near) that route. If the senior wants to go somewhere unusual or out of the way, there may not be an appropriate service.
Timetabling is also a factor. Many services will have specific times. This can mean that the senior can miss their ride. Alternatively, there may not be a service at the time when the senior needs it.
Another limitation is location. Public transport is more prevalent in some areas than others.
For example, large cities will often have many different options, along with plenty of routes and a wide range of times. But, impoverished areas, rural locations and out-of-the-way places may have fewer options.
So, for some people, public transport may simply not be viable. If that’s the case, services like Uber become particularly important. You can also inquire at local senior centers. They are likely to know about other options and may even provide transport themselves in some situations.
Finally, public transport can be confusing. Honestly, it can be confusing to everyone some days and seniors may find it particularly difficult. Some seniors may struggle to know where to catch the bus from or when to get off.
These factors mean that you need to weigh up public transport carefully. It can be an amazing solution in many cases, giving seniors much more freedom than they would have otherwise. But, it can also be stressful and even risky, especially for seniors who are easily confused.
If the latter is the case, it may be worth looking at alternative approaches, such as Uber.
Other Considerations
Because public transport is so localized, the services are going to be different depending on where you live. The same is true for any alternative types of service.
As a result, it’s important to inquire and find out what is available in your area. Staff at senior centers will often know about local services. They may also be able to tell you about any discounts that are available.
