Caregiving is never just you and the person that you’re supporting. Instead, it is a complex situation that will often involve many different individuals, including your family, medical professionals, friends and strangers.
These various people all interact with you, the caree and with one another.
This can create many complexities. For example, communication between some groups is partial or non-existent. Likewise, there can be overlaps in the roles that some people perform and gaps in other areas.
The company Atlas of Caregiving has proposed one practical solution to this, which is the idea of a Care Map. The video below shows the concept.
It is also something you can create yourself, as can be seen in the video below.
Personally, I like the Care Map concept as a way of understanding people’s roles and helping them to understand them as well.
When I was caregiving, I found that there was often confusion and poor communication. This mean that some pieces of information slipped through the cracks and even contributed to health problems in some cases.
Using a tool like this can help you figure out where such issues could occur – and how you can resolve any problems. If nothing else, the idea is one more tool that you can use and it might just make things a little bit easier.
